If you’re anything like me, I have a number of beauty routines – from daily, to weekly, and monthly too.
But with an overwhelming amount of beauty products on the market these days, I often get asked by confused clients as to which products they should be applying first, and in which order.
So this article will answer all of your questions! From daily routines: morning through until the evening, to weekly, and monthly - here’s everything you need to know to get the most benefits from your beauty products.
Each morning you should carry out these 7 steps in this order to freshen up your face before applying your makeup:
Cleanse – every morning your skin needs to be cleansed to remove any residue you may have accumulated over night.
Toner – after cleansing, tap on a toner that’s suited to your skin type. And allow it to settle into the skin.
Serum – serums are extremely concentrated with nutrients, hydrators and antioxidants. And a vitamin C serum in the morning will protect your skin from inflammation, whilst brightening the skin and lightening dark spots as well.
Eye cream – due to their light consistency, be sure to apply your eye cream before all other creams. It’s great to also stick to an eye cream that’s filled with caffeine to help with puffy eyes in the morning.
Spot treatment – if required, for any whiteheads or breakouts, be sure to dab on a good spot treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. For dark spots or acne scars you would be best to use a spot treatment that contains either hydroquinone or niacinamide. Regardless of which one you choose, simply dab a thin layer over the pimple or spot, then wait for it to dry before moving onto the next step.
Moisturize – this step will now lock in all of the products underneath that you’ve used thus far. In the morning opt for a lighter day wearing moisturizer which will keep your skin hydrated.
Sunscreen – and now for the most vital step. To protect your skin from harmful sunrays, opt for a sunscreen that has a minimum of 30+ SPF.
Each evening you should be using a similar approach with these 7 steps:
Cleanse – skip the makeup wipes and opt for a cleanser to suit your skin needs. Whether it’s an oil or cream-based cleanser is entirely up to your individual skincare requirements.
Toner – as like in the morning, it’s always good to freshen your skin by tapping on a toner that’s suited to you skin type.
Serum – in the evening, opt for a serum that’s packed with hyaluronic acid. This will plump up your skin and keep it hydrated while you sleep.
Eye cream – a simple hydrating eye cream at night is the best protection for the delicate eye area overnight.
Spot treatment – you can opt to forgo this spot treatment in the evening if your skin doesn’t require it but as explained above, for any white heads or breakouts, be sure to use a good spot treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. For dark spots or acne scars you would be best to use a spot treatment that contains either hydroquinone or niacinamide.
Moisturiser – dependant on what your age and skin requirements are, each night it’s good to apply a moisturiser that’s filled with hyaluronic acid, lipids, proteins and anti-aging properties.
Retinol – much like sunscreen during the day, applying a retinol cream at night is one of the most vital steps to finalising your evening beauty routine. This little beauty speeds up cell turnover which gives you fresher, smoother and less-wrinkled skin over time. If you’re new to retinols though, be sure to start slow with a pea-size drop one night a week, then work your way up to two nights a week for two weeks, three nights a week for three weeks and then every night moving forward. It’s always good to get advice from your beautician on the best application method once you’ve chosen the retinol for your skin.
Each week you should also be adopting the following 2 steps:
Exfoliation – gently sloughing the surface of your skin each week with an exfoliant that suits your skin is a must in everyone’s beauty routine. Not only does it get rid of dead skin, but it also reveals a more youthful-looking you.
Face mask – is there anything better than an at-home mid-week face mask? Keep your skin looking fresh with a face mask or two each week. You can mix these up and invite your sister/s and friends over for a face mask get-together each week.
And finally, in order to maintain that healthy glow on your face, I’d recommend that you also include the following 3 steps into your monthly beauty routines:
Skin peel/microdermabrasion treatments – every 4-6 weeks you should be committed to giving your skin the treatment that it needs in order to maintain that healthy glow. Opt for a microdermabrasion, skin peel or treatment that generates collagen and decreases open pores.
Deep cleansing skin sweep - be sure to let the experts do a deep cleansing skin sweep each month to combat any nasty breakouts that might pop up. Your skin will thank you for it!
Brow maintenance – now it’s time to frame that beautiful glowing face of yours with monthly eyebrow maintenance.
So there you have it, folks. The above mentioned daily, weekly, and monthly beauty routines will see your skin thrive!
